As the new year begins, Rotimi Onadipe, a prominent online safety advocate and founder of Stay Safe Online Academy Ltd, has urged internet users to arm themselves with knowledge and resources to guard against online scams.
Onadipe, who also publishes an internet safety magazine, delivered the warning during the 155th edition of his global internet safety broadcast at the academy’s headquarters in Ibadan on Thursday.
“Online safety education is essential in today’s digital age, especially with the rise of AI-generated content, deepfake videos, and cloned voices, which make it increasingly difficult to know what is real online,” Onadipe said.
He cautioned that scammers often redesign their tactics each year to exploit unsuspecting individuals. “Don’t give them the opportunity to scam you in this new year,” he stressed.
Onadipe emphasized that knowledge is the best defense against online fraud. He advised users to prioritize online safety education and to equip themselves and their families with the necessary resources to avoid scams.
“Waiting until you become a victim can have devastating consequences, including financial loss, stress-related illnesses, depression, and in extreme cases, even death,” he added.

As 2026 begins, Onadipe’s message serves as a timely reminder that vigilance and awareness remain the most effective shields against online fraud.
