Residents of Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State were thrown into panic on Wednesday following the reported incursion of more than 200 armed officers of the Cameroonian Armed Forces into Nigerian territory.
According to community sources, the foreign military personnel, dressed in full military uniform and carrying weapons, entered the border community without adhering to established international boundary protocols, triggering widespread concern among residents.
The unexpected presence of the Cameroonian troops caused fear and uncertainty within the community, as locals questioned the implications of the development on their safety and the security of the area.
The situation, however, was swiftly brought under control following the intervention of former Vice Chairman of Boki Local Government Area, Hon. Kingsley Mbia, who reportedly arrived at the scene and engaged the Cameroonian military officers in discussions.
Witnesses said Hon. Mbia’s timely intervention helped to calm tensions and prevent the situation from escalating into a larger security crisis.
During his engagement with the officers, Mbia reportedly expressed strong concerns over the unauthorized entry of armed foreign military personnel into Nigerian territory, describing the action as a violation of internationally recognized boundary regulations.
He cautioned the Cameroonian officers against future incursions and stressed the importance of respecting Nigeria’s territorial sovereignty and the rights of border communities.
“The sovereignty of Nigerian communities must be respected at all times. Any unauthorized military entry into our territory is unacceptable and capable of creating unnecessary tension among peaceful residents,” Mbia was quoted as saying.
Following the intervention, calm was restored in the community, while residents returned to their normal activities under close observation of local authorities.
The incident has renewed concerns about border security in the area, with stakeholders calling on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incursion and strengthen surveillance along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
Community leaders have also urged security agencies and government officials to review existing border management mechanisms to prevent similar occurrences in the future and reassure residents of their safety.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from either Nigerian or Cameroonian authorities regarding the incident.
