Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene over concerns surrounding the condition of a critical bridge linking Enugu State with Mbala community in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
Kalu made the appeal during plenary at the Senate while supporting a motion moved by Senator Osita Ngwu, which highlighted the challenges facing communities that depend on the bridge for transportation and commercial activities.
The former Abia State governor said he visited the area last week and urged the Senate to show solidarity with the people of Umunneochi by supporting the call for federal intervention.

He also endorsed the prayers contained in the motion, stressing the need for relevant authorities to address the concerns raised about the bridge.
According to Kalu, the bridge serves as a vital transport link for farmers, traders and other residents who rely on the route for the movement of people and goods between the affected communities.
He noted that the route plays an important role in transporting agricultural produce and sustaining commercial activities, warning that infrastructure challenges along the corridor could affect the livelihoods of residents who depend on it for their daily economic activities.
The senator emphasized that timely intervention by the Federal Government would provide much-needed support to affected communities, particularly farmers and traders who rely on the bridge to access markets and other economic opportunities.
Kalu’s intervention underscores the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure that connects rural communities, facilitates agricultural trade and supports economic development at the grassroots.
His support for the motion adds to calls by lawmakers for government action on infrastructure concerns affecting the movement of people and goods, with residents and business operators in the affected communities looking to the relevant authorities for a response.
