Former presidential campaign spokesperson and actor-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has been appointed as the official spokesperson to former Vice President and 2027 presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar.
Okonkwo announced his appointment in a statement on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for entrusting him with the responsibility and describing the appointment as a reflection of the former vice president’s commitment to democratic principles and inclusive leadership.
According to him, Atiku demonstrated remarkable democratic credentials by embracing dialogue and constructive engagement rather than taking offence at differing opinions expressed by his associates.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank him for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo stated.
The newly appointed spokesperson disclosed that discussions held with Atiku and other stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) addressed concerns relating to the interests of the South-East region. He noted that assurances were given within the framework of the Electoral Act, 2026, and prevailing political realities.
Okonkwo said the consultations underscored efforts to promote inclusiveness and national unity as political alignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also acknowledged the contributions of several political figures and allies whom he credited for supporting the process that culminated in his appointment.
Among those he thanked was Dr. Kashim Imam, whom he described as a brother and friend, for providing guidance and intervention that reinforced the vision of an inclusive political environment where all Nigerians would have equal opportunities regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, age, or cultural background.
The former Labour Party chieftain further commended Mr. Ralphs Nwosu, former National Chairman of the ADC, for what he described as his sacrifices in strengthening the party amid challenges confronting the coalition.
He equally expressed appreciation to Dr. Ekene Onwuka, Senior Special Assistant to Atiku Abubakar on Special Duties, for his efforts in assembling a formidable political team geared towards securing electoral victory for the former vice president in 2027.
Okonkwo also thanked his family, supporters, friends, and well-wishers for their prayers and encouragement, which he said played a significant role in his emergence as spokesperson.
He appealed for continued support and prayers as he assumes the role, pledging to work diligently towards advancing a vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.
The appointment comes as political activities gradually intensify across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major political actors and emerging coalitions positioning themselves for the contest.
