Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has expressed confidence that the proposed State Police system will significantly enhance efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria.
Speaking with journalists on Friday at his country home in Igbere, Abia State, Kalu said he had been a long-standing advocate of State Police, dating back to his tenure as Governor of Abia State.
The former governor noted that his administration established the Bakassi security outfit, which he described as a structure similar to State Police, and credited it with helping to curb criminal activities and improve security in the state during his time in office.
According to Kalu, the recent passage of the State Police bill by the Senate represents a major step toward strengthening security architecture in the country and addressing the growing security challenges confronting many states.
He acknowledged concerns raised by some stakeholders across the country, including friends and associates from both the northern and southern regions, who fear that state governors could misuse State Police to intimidate political opponents and perceived enemies.
However, the lawmaker assured Nigerians that adequate safeguards would be put in place to prevent any abuse of the proposed security framework.
Kalu disclosed that the National Assembly intends to incorporate provisions into the legislation that would ensure proper oversight and accountability in the operation of State Police.
He explained that the safeguards, alongside executive measures, would serve as checks against any attempt by state governors to deploy the security outfit for personal or political interests.
“The National Assembly will put clauses in the law to ensure that governors do not abuse State Police or use it against perceived enemies. There will be adequate checks and balances to protect citizens and ensure the outfit serves its intended purpose,” he said.
The senator also revealed that he returned to his hometown to host his grassroots supporters (OUK Movement, Reality Organization) and appreciate them for their continued loyalty and support over the years.
Kalu commended the people of Abia North for remaining steadfast and committed to his political vision, assuring them of his continued dedication to the development of the senatorial district and the country at large.
The debate over the establishment of State Police has intensified in recent years as stakeholders seek alternative solutions to Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and communal conflicts.
