The Abia State Government has ordered the demolition of a four-storey building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after officials discovered extensive structural defects that pose a serious risk of collapse.
The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its Director General, Arc. Uche Ukeje, following an emergency inspection of the property.
According to the Authority, officials from the Building Control Unit, Engineering Department, and Town Planning Department responded immediately after receiving reports of visible cracks in the building.

A preliminary assessment revealed extensive cracks around the building’s foundation, indicating that the foundation had been severely compromised. The inspection concluded that the structural integrity of the building had been significantly weakened, making it unsafe for human habitation.
In response to the findings, GADA immediately evacuated all occupants of the building to prevent any loss of life. The Authority also marked the structure for demolition, stating that the exercise would be carried out in a controlled and professional manner to ensure the safety of nearby residents and adjoining properties.
“The defect poses a significant structural risk and could lead to the collapse of the building if urgent action is not taken,” the Authority stated.

GADA assured members of the public that there was no cause for panic, emphasizing that the situation had been brought under control and that adequate safety measures had been put in place.
Residents and business owners around Clifford Road have been advised to stay away from the affected building and cooperate with officials while the demolition and other safety operations are being carried out.

The Authority further disclosed that a comprehensive investigation has commenced to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, GADA urged residents across Aba to promptly report any signs of structural distress or defects observed in buildings to the appropriate authorities for immediate assessment and intervention.
The swift intervention by the Abia State Government is expected to prevent what could have resulted in a major tragedy, as authorities continue to prioritize the protection of lives and property across the state.
