The Asa Liberation Movement has given the Abia State representative on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Eruba Dimgba, a 21-day ultimatum to mobilise contractors back to site on abandoned road projects across Asa in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

The group made the demand in a letter addressed to Eruba following deliberations at its general meeting held on September 8, 2026, where members expressed concern over what they described as the prolonged abandonment of several NDDC road projects in the area.

According to the movement, several projects were publicly flagged off more than two years ago but have yet to witness meaningful mobilisation of contractors to site.

Among the projects listed by the group are the Owaza–Imo River Road, Uzuaku–Asa High School Junction Road, Umuorie–Umukalu Road and Umuebulungwu–Obohia Road, as well as other NDDC road projects across Asa.

The movement said the affected roads are critical to the socio-economic development of the communities, noting that they provide links to schools, healthcare facilities, markets and other economic centres.

It said the continued abandonment of the projects had subjected residents to hardship, particularly during the rainy season, when poor road conditions allegedly worsen access and transportation across the communities.

The group therefore called on the NDDC leadership in Abia State to ensure that contractors handling the projects return to site within 21 days of receiving or having the letter published.

It also demanded clear and realistic timelines for the commencement, execution and completion of the affected projects.

The Asa Liberation Movement further urged the NDDC to ensure that the projects are executed in accordance with approved specifications and engineering standards, warning against contractors returning to site merely for what it described as “symbolic or cosmetic activities.”

The group also demanded public disclosure of the status of the projects, including any administrative, contractual, funding or other challenges responsible for their delay or abandonment.

Another key demand was the construction of standard and functional drainage systems alongside the roads to prevent flooding of homes, farmlands, compounds and adjoining communities.

The movement equally called for effective monitoring of the projects to ensure value for money, quality workmanship and timely completion.

While issuing the ultimatum, the group stressed that its action was driven by its commitment to peaceful advocacy, accountability and community development and was not intended to undermine the government, the NDDC or any individual.

It, however, warned that failure to see “visible and satisfactory action” towards the mobilisation of contractors at the expiration of the 21-day period would compel it to explore what it described as “legitimate, peaceful and lawful avenues” to draw the attention of relevant authorities and the public to the situation.

“Asa people have waited long enough. We need action, not another flag-off,” the group said.

The movement appealed to Eruba to use his office and influence to ensure that the long-awaited projects receive the necessary attention and urgency.

It said its ultimate objective was not confrontation but “development, accountability and the completion of projects” capable of positively impacting present and future generations in Asa.

The letter was signed by the President of the Asa Liberation Movement, Hon. Emeka Adiele; Secretary, Comr. Uju Ihunanyachukwu; and Spokesperson, Comr. Charles Samankwe.

Copies of the letter were also sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Managing Director of the NDDC, the Executive Director of Projects of the commission, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.
