Civil Liberties Organization CLO Anambra State Branch has lamented over escalating high political tensions in the State as a result of unguarded, provocative, insultive and despicable utterances against their opponents which is a threat, unhealthy and bane of our democracy, democratic governance and culture.
It is very unfortunate and detestable that several appeals by CLO to our political gladiators to toe the part of constitutionality, civility, rule of law and decorum were ignored.
Most pathetic, regrettable and disgusting is that Anambra state has been thrown into a theater of uncertainty and peace of the grave yard over the unfortunate development.
It is very unfortunate that those we look up to as model, moral compass and mentors engages in character assassinations, unsubstantiated allegations, counter allegations, casting of aspersions to opponents, name callings, indecent statement and what have you.
This is contained in a press statement issued to newsmen in Awka Anambra State themed “If the citadel of justice is corrupt what will happen to body politics” endorsed by Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme AMBP-UN Chairman and Chidi Mbah Secretary described the act as disservice and disgraceful to the state and her citizens.
We are appealing to our religious, traditional and Civil Society leaders to urgently convene stakeholders meeting with the governorship candidates and their running mates of all political parties participating in the Nov. 8th gubernatorial election and resolve with justice their disagreements and advice them and their supporters to cease fire and stop forthwith use of abusive and destructive words against their opponents.
We are appealing to His Grace Most Rev Valerian Maduka Okeke, Bishop Owen Nwokolo, Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor, His Majesty Igwe Alfred Achebe,Igwe of Obosi and Chairman Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Bishop Dr.Moses Ezedebego Chairman PFN Anambra State, Nze Emeka Umeagbalasi Chairman Southeast Coalition of Civil Society Organization, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme Chairman CLO, Bishop E.C.Obiora to urgently convoke peace meeting with warring contestants and their supporters.
The peace and reconciliation meeting become expedite and ineluctable to avoid the situation degenerating into physical confrontations and bloodbath.
We reiterate our appeal to Commissioner of Police to convene meeting with the candidates and advice them to sign peace and morality accord.
Our political class must note that life and death comes from tongue, let us think before we speak to avoid killings people with our tongue.
According to Socrates the only solution to anger is silence, let us show love, think, act and preach love. As Christians we must forgive one another, love one another as a sign of God’s presence in us.
According to Mahatma Gandhi “A tooth for a tooth the world will be toothless. An eye for an eye the world will be blind. An evil for an evil the world will be full of evil” CLO posited.
Let us collectively stop character assassination and start the healings through forgiveness, love, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
