A Chinese travel content creator, Xiao Jony, has shared a disturbing account of his experience in Lagos, Nigeria, alleging that he was repeatedly stopped and asked to pay money while travelling through the country.

What began as a visit to a Nigerian market to experience local food reportedly turned into an encounter that left the traveller questioning his decision to visit.

When he asked why he was expected to pay, he claimed the response was that they were Nigerian citizens while he was a foreigner and, therefore, they had the right to collect money from him.

The alleged encounter, however, was only the beginning of what Xiao described as a frustrating experience.

According to Xiao, some men in the market approached him and demanded money from him.

He claimed that while travelling along a 10-kilometre stretch, he encountered more than 20 checkpoints, with people at the various points allegedly demanding money from him.

The repeated demands reportedly left the Chinese content creator frustrated and unhappy with his experience in the country.

At the end of his account, Xiao gave a blunt assessment of his trip, telling his audience: “Do not come to Nigeria.”

His comments have sparked discussions online, particularly over the experiences of foreign visitors and the potential impact of alleged extortion on Nigeria’s reputation as a destination for tourists and international travellers.

However, the claims made by Xiao in the post could not be independently verified from the information available, and it is unclear who operated the checkpoints or whether they were affiliated with any government agency or security organisation.

Nigeria is home to a wide range of tourist attractions, cultural festivals, historical sites and diverse culinary traditions. But accounts of negative experiences involving foreign visitors can potentially undermine efforts to improve the country’s tourism image and attract more international travellers.
