The Chairman Senate Committee on Southeast Development Commission SEDC, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, (MON) has commiserated with the family, friends, colleagues and the diplomatic community on the demise of Professor Joy Uche Angela Ogwu who died at age 79 on Monday in New York, United States of America.
Kalu noted that her departure will create a void that will be keenly felt in Nigeria, a global voice for peace and the diplomatic community.
Professor Ogwu was born on August 22, 1946 and was a former foreign minister of Nigeria (2006) and a former permanent representative of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York from 2008 to 2017.
”I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and the entire diplomatic community on the sad passing of Professor Joy Uche Angela Ogwu—a truly eminent Nigerian, an outstanding African diplomat and a global voice for peace and progress. Her departure leaves a void that will be keenly felt, not only within our nation but across the continent and beyond.” Kalu said.
Kalu further noted the life of Prof. Ogwu was recognized for her stellar service, intellectual brilliance and strong commitment to the country’s voice in the community of nations, while noting that as the first woman to hold the post of Permanent Representative to the United Nations from Nigeria she brought dignity, strategy, vision and moral simplicity to international engagements.
”Professor Ogwu’s life was marked by stellar service, intellectual brilliance and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s role in the world. As Minister of Foreign Affairs and as one of Africa’s most respected diplomats, she brought dignity, strategic vision and moral clarity to our international engagements.” Kalu stated.
The former Governor of Abia State, Kalu, prayed to God to give her family and loved ones the heart to bear the loss of their matriarch as her soul rests in peace.
Expressing grieve and sympathy for the deceased family, immediate, extended family members and the diplomatic community, Kalu mourned Prof. Ogwu while describing her as a champion, a States person whose legacy will shine and remain eternal.
”May Almighty God rest her soul in perfect peace, and may He grant all her loved ones the fortitude to endure this irreparable loss. On behalf of the people of Abia North senatorial zone, my family and myself, I express heartfelt sympathy and solidarity. Nigeria mourns a daughter, Africa mourns a champion, the world mourns a statesperson. Her legacy will forever shine.” Kalu asserted.
