The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State has responded to recent claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the representation of Bende Federal Constituency, insisting that its prospective candidate, Dr. Chima Anyaso, possesses the integrity, competence, and leadership qualities required to represent the constituency effectively.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Iroegbu Emenike, the Labour Party accused the APC of attempting to defend what it described as a breach of a long-standing “gentlemen’s agreement” on zoning and rotation within Bende Federal Constituency.
The party maintained that while competence and capacity remain important qualities in leadership, such attributes are not exclusive to any individual or political group.
According to the statement, both the Ikwuishi and Umunna blocs of the constituency are blessed with capable sons and daughters who can provide quality representation and leadership.
The Labour Party argued that respect for agreements and commitments remains a fundamental test of leadership, adding that public office should be guided by honor, trust, and accountability.
The party also dismissed claims by the APC that an independent opinion poll indicated widespread support for its candidate, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
Describing the purported poll as lacking credibility, the LP questioned the APC’s ability to conduct a transparent public survey, citing what it called persistent internal crises and disputes within the opposition party.
“The people of Bende are politically enlightened and cannot be misled by propaganda or manufactured opinion polls,” the statement said.
The Labour Party further defended Dr. Anyaso’s credentials, describing him as a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community development advocate whose impact predates his political aspirations.
According to the party, Dr. Anyaso has spent over 18 years sponsoring educational programmes for children in Bende and has consistently invested in initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the people.

The statement highlighted his business accomplishments, mentorship of young entrepreneurs, and contributions to economic development, noting that his philanthropic efforts were not politically motivated but part of a longstanding commitment to community service.
The party also pointed to his academic and professional exposure, stating that he has received training at Harvard University and recently addressed an international audience at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.
Labour Party leaders said Dr. Anyaso represents a new generation of leadership focused on transparency, accountability, and people-oriented governance.
The party linked his vision to the administration of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, which it said has demonstrated that effective leadership can deliver meaningful development and improve the lives of citizens.
The LP further argued that the political landscape in Bende Federal Constituency is evolving and that voters are increasingly demanding leaders who respect agreements, uphold integrity, and prioritize the interests of the people over personal ambition.
Reaffirming its confidence in Dr. Anyaso, the party maintained that he remains well-positioned to provide effective representation for the constituency and expressed optimism that the electorate would make its choice based on character, performance, and commitment to service ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement concluded by expressing confidence that the people of Bende Federal Constituency would ultimately determine the future direction of their representation through the democratic process.
