Otti Commissions Rehabilitated Cottage Hospital in Abia After Years of Abandonment

Governor Alex Otti on Tuesday commissioned the Government Cottage Hospital located in Umuhie, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, marking the revival of a healthcare facility that had reportedly been abandoned for several years by previous administrations.

The newly rehabilitated cottage hospital was officially unveiled on May 26, 2026, as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery across Abia State.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Otti recalled how the hospital project had remained neglected and unused for many years before his administration intervened to restore it for public use.

“It is interesting that this cottage hospital that is standing here, unused and lying fallow for several years. I know several years ago, we used to pass this place and it was just fallow,” the governor said.

According to him, the decision to renovate and rehabilitate the facility was taken after the attention of his administration was drawn to the poor state of the hospital.

“When our attention was brought to it, we decided to weigh in, renovate and rehabilitate it and put it to use,” he added.

Governor Otti further stated that his administration remains committed to delivering quality infrastructure and services to the people of the state, stressing that the government would not compromise on standards.

“Our standards are a bit high and we can’t apologize for it. Anything we are doing, we have to do it well. If we are not ready to do it well, then we won’t do it at all,” he said.

He noted that the renovated hospital now meets modern standards and is equipped to provide improved healthcare services to residents of Umuhie and surrounding communities.

“If you walk into the building, you will agree with me that it is very standard,” the governor stated.

Residents and stakeholders at the event applauded the state government for reviving the abandoned healthcare facility, describing the development as a major boost to healthcare access in the area.
