In a recent media chat with pressmen in his country home Camp Neya Igbere, Senator Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, former Governor of Abia State, addressed a range of pressing issues surrounding Nigeria’s economy, political landscape, and his personal political aspirations.
Speaking with conviction, Kalu outlined the country’s economic challenges and the efforts underway to stabilize the situation, while also emphasizing the importance of party unity and political endorsements.
Economic Challenges and Recovery Efforts
Senator Kalu began by acknowledging the economic difficulties currently facing Nigeria, attributing much of the strain to global factors, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and fluctuating international economic conditions.
Despite the challenges, he assured that the government, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, is working tirelessly to stabilize the economy. Kalu pointed out key efforts such as the stabilization of foreign exchange rates and the controversial removal of petroleum subsidies, while recognizing the hardship faced by the Nigerian populace.
He emphasized that economic recovery would take time, but expressed optimism that the benefits would eventually reach the grassroots, improving the living conditions of everyday Nigerians. “The government is doing all it can to address these challenges, and we must be patient as the solutions begin to take root,” Kalu said.
Political Dynamics and Party Unity
The former governor also addressed the political landscape within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party, stressing the need for unity and unwavering support for President Tinubu’s administration. He addressed rumors of fragmentation within the party, dismissing them as unfounded and reaffirming his commitment to the APC’s collective success.
OUK also touched on his recent visit to Governor Alex Oti of Abia State, clarifying that the trip was not politically motivated, but rather aimed at fostering constructive dialogue and collaboration for the betterment of the state.
Governance and Infrastructure Achievements
Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Abia State, Kalu proudly highlighted his administration’s achievements, including major infrastructure projects such as the construction of Enyimba International stadium and Umuahia Township stadium and the establishment of the Bakassi Security Outfit to tackle crime and ensure safety.
He underscored the significance of building a solid foundation for future administrations and stressed the importance of long-term infrastructural development.
“I’m proud of the progress we made in Abia State, especially in the areas of infrastructure and security. These are the building blocks that any future government can build on,” Senator Kalu said.
Private Business Ventures and Economic Contributions
Beyond politics, Kalu discussed his private business ventures, which he believes are crucial to boosting the local economy and creating jobs. He pointed to the establishment of factories in Igbere as part of his commitment to fostering economic growth and reducing unemployment in the region. OUK emphasized that the private sector plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economic stability and development.
“We must encourage the growth of businesses that can provide jobs and boost the local economy. It is through these kinds of investments that we can bring lasting prosperity to our people,” he noted.
Political Endorsements and Future Ambitions
Looking ahead, Senator Kalu reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, emphasizing the importance of party unity in achieving a stable government. Despite acknowledging his own presidential ambitions, Kalu reiterated his commitment to supporting the current administration and prioritizing national stability over personal political aspirations.
Kalu also highlighted the need for continued development and peace at the grassroots level, stressing that local communities must remain engaged and involved in governance.
In his closing remarks, Kalu outlined a series of action points aimed at improving infrastructure and addressing local concerns in Abia State. These included discussions with Governor Alex Oti regarding the retrieval of the Abia Warriors football club, requesting the extension of road construction projects to Okpo to the border of Cross River in the 2026 budget, and urging the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to address electricity issues in Igbere and Ohafia. He also vowed to investigate the theft of armored cables in the community.
Additionally, Senator Kalu shared his intention to prepare for re-election to the Senate in 2027, signaling his continued commitment to public service and representing the interests of his constituents.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s reflections on Nigeria’s economic and political situation reveal a leader deeply invested in the progress of his country. His commitment to supporting President Tinubu, his ongoing initiatives to boost local economies, and his call for political unity are central to his vision for a more stable and prosperous Nigeria.
With his eyes set on the future, Kalu continues to position himself as a key figure in both national governance and the development of his home state, Abia.
