Sen Kalu Celebrates Archbishop Ugorji at 74, Lauds His Spiritual and Moral Leadership

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, has felicitated the Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, on the occasion of his 74th birthday.

In a statement issued by his media office on Thursday and signed by George Maduka, Senator Kalu described Archbishop Ugorji as an outstanding cleric whose life and ministry have continued to provide moral direction and spiritual guidance to Nigeria. He commended the Catholic leader for his steadfast commitment to faith, peace, and national unity, noting that his influence extends beyond the Church to the broader society.

The international business mogul praised Archbishop Ugorji’s decades of dedicated service to God and humanity, highlighting his humility, wisdom, and courage in the discharge of his pastoral responsibilities. According to Senator Kalu, the Archbishop’s leadership as head of the Owerri Archdiocese and President of the CBCN has strengthened unity within the Catholic Church while also promoting constructive engagement on national issues.

He noted that Archbishop Ugorji has remained a consistent voice of conscience, particularly during challenging periods in the country’s history. Through his homilies, pastoral letters, and public statements, the cleric, he said, has continued to advocate justice, peace, good governance, and respect for human dignity, inspiring Nigerians across religious and ethnic lines.

Senator Kalu further acknowledged the Archbishop’s immense contributions to education, moral formation, and human development, especially in the South East. He observed that under Archbishop Ugorji’s leadership, the Church has sustained its tradition of standing with the poor and the vulnerable, while also playing a vital role in peacebuilding and social cohesion.
