Abuja — Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has strongly condemned the recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa, describing the incidents as unprovoked and unacceptable.
Speaking on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, the lawmaker joined his colleagues in denouncing the attacks and calling for immediate and coordinated action to halt the growing trend of violence against foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians residing in South Africa.
During the debate, Senator Kalu threw his weight behind resolutions urging the Federal Government to take decisive diplomatic and protective steps to safeguard its citizens abroad. He stressed that Nigeria must act swiftly to ensure the safety and security of its people, regardless of their location.
The former Abia State governor placed particular emphasis on the need to protect Nigerians from the South East region, including indigenes of Abia North Senatorial District, many of whom are actively engaged in legitimate businesses in South Africa. According to him, these individuals contribute meaningfully to both the Nigerian and South African economies and should not be subjected to violence or intimidation.
Kalu further reiterated that the Nigerian government has a constitutional and moral obligation to defend the dignity, rights, and welfare of its citizens globally. He called for strengthened diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa to address the root causes of the attacks and prevent future occurrences.
The Senate’s position reflects growing concern among Nigerian leaders over the recurring incidents of xenophobia in South Africa, which have sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection measures for Nigerians living abroad.
Senator Kalu concluded by urging unity among Nigerians and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting its citizens wherever they may be.
