Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has declared that Nigeria’s democratic institutions have continued to grow stronger despite the economic, security, and political challenges that have confronted the nation over the last 27 years.
Kalu made the assertion on Saturday while delivering a message at the 27th Democracy Day Inter-Denominational Church Service held in Abuja as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.
Reflecting on the country’s democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999, the Deputy Speaker said democracy has taken firm root in Nigeria and remains a resilient system that has withstood numerous trials.
According to him, the endurance of democratic governance in the face of persistent challenges is a testament to the resilience and determination of Nigerians.
“Twenty-seven years ago, our nation embarked on a democratic journey that has not been without challenges. We have experienced moments of triumph and moments of trial. We have faced economic pressures, security concerns, social tensions, and political contests. Yet, through it all, democracy has endured. That endurance is itself proof of the resilience of the Nigerian spirit,” Kalu stated.
He noted that Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest and most influential democracies, stressing that the country’s democratic institutions have become stronger while electoral processes continue to improve.
The Deputy Speaker observed that citizens are increasingly playing active roles in shaping governance and holding leaders accountable. However, he emphasized that the true measure of democracy lies not only in the conduct of elections but in its ability to improve the lives of citizens, expand opportunities, protect freedoms, and strengthen national unity.

Kalu also used the occasion to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the administration’s commitment to democratic governance and national renewal through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He highlighted several reforms undertaken by the Federal Government, including efforts to stabilize the economy, improve public finances, expand infrastructure, attract foreign investment, advance tax reforms, increase domestic revenue, and strengthen local government autonomy.
The Deputy Speaker further praised investments in education through the Student Loan Scheme, social intervention programmes, food security initiatives, and reforms in the oil and gas sector aimed at boosting production and restoring investor confidence.
While acknowledging that reforms often require difficult decisions and patience, Kalu said lasting national transformation can only be achieved through courage, vision, and commitment to the greater good.
He offered prayers for President Tinubu, asking God to grant him wisdom, strength, good health, and discernment as he continues to lead the country through a period of economic and institutional reforms.
Reaffirming the commitment of the National Assembly to democratic development, Kalu said lawmakers remain focused on enacting legislation that promotes economic growth, social justice, security, education, innovation, and overall national development.
He assured Nigerians that the House of Representatives would continue to work collaboratively with all arms and levels of government to achieve social stability, inclusive prosperity, and sustainable development.
“As lawmakers, we understand that democracy is not measured solely by elections. Democracy must ultimately be judged by its capacity to improve lives, expand opportunities, protect freedoms, and strengthen national cohesion,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker also called on Nigerians to reject cynicism and hopelessness, urging citizens to embrace nation-building, peace, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Drawing inspiration from faith, he said perseverance, compassion, humility, and unity remain essential values for overcoming national challenges and building a stronger country.
Kalu further called for prayers for President Tinubu, public office holders, members of the armed forces, security agencies, youths, women, and all Nigerians, noting that their collective efforts are crucial to the continued success of democracy in the country.
He concluded by urging citizens to renew their commitment to building a Nigeria where opportunities abound, institutions function effectively, and every citizen can realize their full potential.
The statement was issued by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
