The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has been named the Lawmaker of the Year (House of Representatives) by Daily Times Newspapers as part of activities marking the newspaper’s centenary celebration.
The newspaper formally conveyed Kalu’s selection over the weekend when the Chairman of Folio Media Group and Publisher of Daily Times, Chief Fidelis Anosike, led a delegation to the Deputy Speaker’s office in Abuja to present the nomination and official invitation letters for the awards ceremony.
According to the organisation, Kalu emerged as the winner of the category after receiving the highest number of votes in an extensive nomination and public voting process.
The selection, Daily Times said, was subsequently confirmed by the Times Heroes Award Council and other stakeholders in recognition of Kalu’s leadership, public service and contributions to national development.
In the letter conveying the nomination, Anosike, on behalf of the Board, Management and Organising Committee of the Daily Times Nigeria @100 Celebration, congratulated the Deputy Speaker on his selection.
The letter stated that Kalu would receive the “DTN@100 Lawmaker of the Year (House of Representatives)” award following the completion of the nomination and public voting process.
It added that recipients of the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards would be featured among outstanding personalities and institutions in the 700-page Nigerian Grand Book being produced as part of the centenary celebrations.
The public presentation of the awards is scheduled to take place in Abuja on September 3, 2026, as part of activities marking the 100th anniversary of Daily Times of Nigeria.
Reacting to the recognition, Kalu expressed appreciation to the organisers for considering him worthy of the award.
The Deputy Speaker said the honour would further motivate him to intensify his efforts in serving the people of Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, whom he represents in the National Assembly, as well as Nigerians at large.
He said the recognition would encourage him to continue contributing to the development of his constituency and the country.
