It has been a busy week for Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. Between family celebrations, grassroots meetings, condolence visits, and work in the Senate, the Abia North lawmaker moved between duty and service.

The week began on a happy note. Senator Kalu paid a courtesy visit to his colleague, Senator Oyewuchi Ezenwa, to celebrate a major family milestone. Ezenwa’s son, Barrister Chidubem Ezenwa, was recently called to the Nigerian Bar.

Kalu said the achievement was the product of years of hard work and staying power. He also congratulated every other young lawyer called to the Bar this season. For them, he said, this is just the start of a serious journey.

He urged the new lawyers to practice with honesty, wisdom, and integrity. According to him, the law profession is key to protecting justice and keeping our democracy strong. He wished them success and asked them to commit themselves to serving the people and the nation. He ended by sending his best wishes again to the Ezenwa family.

Away from the celebration, Kalu stayed focused on politics at home in Abia State. He received a report from the State Executive Committee of the OUK Movement after their visit to the Bende Local Government Area chapter. The visit is part of ongoing grassroots engagement across the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The report pleased him. He said it showed strong commitment, unity, and energy from members in Bende. He was especially encouraged that they spoke openly about the problems in their communities and brought forward practical ideas.

Kalu thanked them for their support and for believing in the vision of the movement. He promised that his commitment to serving Abia North and the rest of Abia State has not changed. His focus, he said, will remain on projects and policies that improve daily life through sustainable development. He also stressed the need to keep strengthening the movement’s structures so that together they can build a better future. He closed by telling supporters to keep hope alive.

On Thursday, July 10, 2026, the senator was in Akama Oghe, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. He joined family, friends, and political associates for the burial of Mrs. Modesta Ijeoma Obieze, JP, née Amalu. She was the mother of Rt. Hon. Barr. Chima E. Obieze, who represents Ezeagu Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly.

At the funeral, Kalu described Mama Obieze as a woman of faith, dignity, compassion, and quiet service. He said her life and the good she did would continue to inspire those who knew her.

He extended his condolences to Rt. Hon. Chima Obieze, the Obieze and Amalu families, and the people of Ezeagu. He prayed that God would give them strength to bear the loss and that He would grant Mrs. Obieze eternal rest.

Back in Abuja, legislative work continued. In the Senate, Kalu supported the second reading of the Counterfeit Medical Products, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Bill, 2026.

He said it plainly: no Nigerian should lose a loved one because of fake drugs or unsafe food. Counterfeit medicines and poorly processed foods, he noted, are a serious threat to public health and need stronger laws.

The bill seeks to criminalize the production, distribution, and sale of fake medicines. It also proposes a ban on drug hawking in places not approved by law, and it introduces tougher penalties for offenders. For Kalu, protecting the health and lives of Nigerians must remain a national priority.

The senator also recorded another win in the chamber. A bill he sponsored to provide a framework for Nigeria’s transition to electric vehicles passed its second reading.

Kalu explained that the bill is about preparing Nigeria for a global shift to cleaner transport. If passed into law, it will support local manufacturing of electric vehicles, encourage new investments, create jobs, and help protect the environment.

He said a clear legal framework will make Nigeria more competitive and less dependent on fossil fuels. The move to electric vehicles, he added, will benefit the environment and also drive long-term economic and industrial growth.

As more countries embrace clean energy, he argued, Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind. With proper planning and the right laws, the country can take advantage of opportunities in green transport and modern manufacturing.

Kalu restated his commitment to sponsoring laws that support national development, industrialization, and the welfare of citizens. His focus, he said, will remain on policies that deliver lasting growth, create jobs, and improve living standards.
