The political controversy surrounding Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, following his reception at this year’s Item Day celebration has sparked fresh exchanges between supporters of the federal lawmaker and those of Hon. Mascot Alex Ikwechegh, popularly known as Onye Ocha N’Aba.
In a strongly worded political commentary, supporters of Ikwechegh have faulted attempts by some individuals allegedly sympathetic to Kalu to link the Aba North and Aba South representative to the political developments surrounding the Item Day celebration.
They argued that Ikwechegh should not be drawn into a controversy that they described as unrelated to him, insisting that political leaders should be judged by their records of service and contributions to their respective constituencies.
The commentary also sought to compare the constituency interventions of both lawmakers, particularly in infrastructure, empowerment, electricity and community development.
According to the claims made by Ikwechegh’s supporters, the federal lawmaker has facilitated the renovation of schools, distributed 17 transformers across Aba North and Aba South, as well as parts of Obingwa in November 2024, barely a year after assuming office.
They further claimed that Ikwechegh had empowered nearly 5,000 people across his constituency and was preparing another empowerment programme.
On community infrastructure, the supporters cited the distribution of more than 6,500 streetlights across Aba North and Aba South, describing the intervention as an effort to improve public illumination and enhance neighbourhood safety.

They also highlighted the donation of two coaster buses reportedly providing free transportation services for schoolchildren and other residents.
The supporters maintained that Ikwechegh’s philanthropic activities predated his election into the House of Representatives, arguing that his public profile was built through community interventions before he assumed legislative office.
The commentary contrasted these claims with Kalu’s constituency projects, questioning whether his position as Deputy Speaker had translated into sufficient development outcomes for the people of Bende Federal Constituency.
It specifically questioned the scale and impact of projects attributed to Kalu, including classroom renovations and transformer distribution, arguing that his position in the National Assembly should come with measurable development outcomes.
However, the comparisons and figures presented by Ikwechegh’s supporters have not been independently verified, and no response from Kalu or his representatives was included in the commentary.
Beyond constituency projects, the statement raised broader political concerns, including allegations of intimidation and the treatment of some young Abians and political stakeholders. It referenced the reported incarceration of Emenike Okorie and raised questions about Kalu’s political relationships with prominent figures, including former Abia State Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Governor Alex Otti and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.
These allegations were presented by the authors as issues requiring public clarification.
The commentary also dismissed criticisms allegedly directed at Ikwechegh over his streetlight distribution programme, arguing that providing electricity-powered illumination and improving community safety should be recognised as legitimate constituency interventions rather than used as grounds for political attacks.
Interestingly, the statement claimed that Ikwechegh was in Canada during the unfolding political exchanges and had remained silent on the disagreement involving Kalu and other political actors.
It consequently urged Kalu’s supporters to avoid dragging the Aba lawmaker into the controversy, insisting that political disagreements should be addressed through a presentation of verifiable records rather than personal attacks.
The authors concluded that political leadership should be measured by tangible achievements, public confidence and the ability to improve the living conditions of constituents, rather than political titles or proximity to influential individuals.
They maintained that Ikwechegh’s political standing should be assessed independently of the ongoing disagreements surrounding Kalu, adding that both lawmakers should ultimately be judged by their respective records of service.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum in Abia State, the growing exchanges between supporters of prominent political figures highlight the increasing importance of constituency performance, public perception and political influence in shaping the state’s political landscape.
