A political ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Dino Melaye, has lambasted Peter Obi following reports of his defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the National Democratic Coalition.
In a strongly worded statement, Melaye accused Obi of avoiding internal party challenges, suggesting that his exit from ADC reflects an inability to withstand political pressure. According to him, leadership requires resilience, especially in the face of crises, which he argued are far more complex at the national level than within party structures.
Melaye questioned Obi’s readiness to govern a country like Nigeria, emphasizing that navigating internal party disputes is a critical test of leadership capacity. He argued that anyone unwilling to confront party-level turbulence may struggle with the broader and more demanding challenges of national governance.
Using a metaphor to drive home his point, the former senator described Obi as a politician who prefers “comfortable environments,” adding that the realities of Nigerian politics demand toughness and endurance. He further alleged that Obi has consistently avoided competitive political processes, claiming that his previous political opportunities—including gubernatorial and presidential tickets—were secured without going through rigorous party primaries.
The outspoken politician also linked Obi’s alleged move to the NDC with broader political interests, controversially describing the platform as being aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), though he did not provide evidence to support the claim.
Melaye’s remarks have since stirred reactions across political circles, with supporters and critics of Obi engaging in renewed debate over his political strategy and leadership style.
As political realignments continue ahead of future elections, such criticisms highlight the deepening divisions and ongoing contest for influence within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
