Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has once again stirred reactions after he was spotted controlling traffic in Aba, Abia State.
The federal lawmaker was seen arriving at Ahia Ohuru market on a motorcycle, where he interacted with traders, particularly market women, while urging them to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the interaction, Ikwechegh reportedly encouraged the women to support the Labour Party in the forthcoming elections, describing the party as both his political platform and that of the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti.
According to eyewitnesses, the lawmaker later stepped into the middle of a busy road junction where he began directing vehicular movement and attempting to ease traffic congestion in the commercial city.

However, the development has generated mixed reactions among residents and political observers, many of whom described the action as more of a political performance than genuine grassroots leadership.
Some critics argued that while the gesture may appear humble and people-oriented, constituents are more concerned about visible developmental projects, improved infrastructure, youth empowerment, and legislative impact from their representative at the National Assembly.
Political analysts noted that this is not the first time Ikwechegh has been seen controlling traffic in Aba since assuming office, raising questions about whether such public displays are gradually becoming a substitute for tangible constituency achievements.
“Directing traffic may create social media moments, but the people expect more serious representation and measurable projects,” a resident who spoke anonymously said.
Others, however, defended the lawmaker, insisting that leaders should remain connected to the people irrespective of their political status.
The incident has since sparked conversations across social media platforms, with many residents debating whether the move reflects simplicity and accessibility or merely a carefully staged political gimmick ahead of future electoral contests.
