The African Pillar of Sports and former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their courageous and commendable performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the team as worthy ambassadors who made the nation proud despite their semi-final defeat to host nation, Morocco.

In a passionate statement on Friday shared on his verified Facebook page , Senator Kalu noted that football, like life itself, is not a mathematical equation where one plus one must always equal two.

According to him, the outcome of matches is often influenced by several factors beyond skill and preparation, including officiating decisions and the pressure exerted by partisan home crowds.

He stressed that the Super Eagles displayed exceptional resilience, discipline, and character, even in the face of obvious distractions arising from hostile officiating and overwhelming support for the host team.

“The Super Eagles fought gallantly and showed the true Nigerian spirit. They played with heart, courage, and determination, refusing to be intimidated by the atmosphere or circumstances surrounding the match. In my assessment, they won in character, unity, and national pride,” Senator Kalu stated.

He emphasized that the team’s journey to the semi-final stage of the continental tournament is a strong indication that Nigerian football is on the right path. According to him, the players demonstrated tactical maturity, teamwork, and a deep sense of patriotism throughout the competition, earning the respect of football lovers across Africa and beyond.

Senator Kalu urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to retain the current coach and his technical crew for another four years, noting that stability is crucial for long-term success in football development.

He explained that frequent changes in coaching personnel often disrupt team cohesion and stall progress, while continuity allows ideas to mature and young talents to be properly groomed.

While applauding the players’ commitment, the former Abia State Governor also called for increased discipline within the team, stressing that professionalism, focus, and adherence to team rules are essential for achieving greater success in future tournaments. He encouraged the gradual introduction of new players to strengthen competition within the squad and ensure depth in all departments.

In addition, Senator Kalu advocated for the establishment of well-structured camps for home-based players, where they can receive steady, high-quality training and exposure.

According to him, investing in domestic talents will not only strengthen the national team but also revive the local league and create sustainable growth for Nigerian football.

“The Super Eagles have once again reminded us why football remains a powerful tool for unity and national pride. I am immensely proud of them, and I urge Nigerians to continue to support and believe in our team. With discipline, continuity, and proper planning, greater glory awaits Nigeria,” Senator Kalu concluded.
