The lawmaker representing Obingwa West State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr., has emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 Abia South Senatorial District election.
Erondu secured a landslide victory in the party’s primary election, defeating three other aspirants to clinch the APC ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His emergence now sets up what is expected to be a fierce political battle with incumbent senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who is currently the only widely recognised aspirant under the Labour Party for the Abia South senatorial seat.
Interestingly, both Erondu and Abaribe hail from Obingwa Local Government Area, adding more political weight to the contest expected to dominate the district ahead of 2027.
The APC primary election results were announced by the electoral officer, Prof. Emmanuel Kalu Agabaeze, after votes from the six local government areas in Abia South Senatorial District were collated.
The senatorial district comprises Aba North, Aba South, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East and Ukwa West local government areas.
According to the results, Erondu polled a total of 16,614 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Nyerere Anyim, who garnered 5,206 votes.
Other aspirants in the contest included Dame Blessing Nwagba and Prince Paul Ikonne, who scored 4,156 and 4,099 votes respectively.
A breakdown of the results showed that in Aba North LGA, Erondu secured 1,840 votes, while Anyim polled 1,071 votes. Ikonne recorded 1,504 votes, while Nwagba got 1,447 votes.
In Aba South LGA, Erondu maintained his lead with 2,629 votes, defeating Anyim, who scored 1,085 votes. Ikonne received 1,219 votes, while Nwagba polled 1,195 votes.
At Obingwa LGA, Erondu recorded one of his strongest performances, polling 3,612 votes. Anyim secured 504 votes, while Ikonne and Nwagba managed 41 and 27 votes respectively.
In Ukwa East LGA, Erondu garnered 1,836 votes ahead of Anyim’s 646 votes. Ikonne scored 329 votes, while Nwagba polled 437 votes.
Results from Ukwa West LGA showed Erondu further extending his dominance with 3,675 votes. Anyim secured 2,119 votes, while Ikonne and Nwagba recorded 716 and 836 votes respectively.
In Ugwunagbo LGA, the Obingwa-born politician polled 3,022 votes to maintain a commanding lead over his opponents. Anyim scored 285 votes, Ikonne got 290 votes, while Nwagba secured 214 votes.
