The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning to amend the Constitution to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the northern region.
In a statement released to Nigerians, the Presidency described the report as fake news designed to create tension, political disaffection, and unnecessary controversy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the viral publication, which relied on anonymous sources, is part of a coordinated attempt by “desperate politicians” to destabilize the country and overheat the political atmosphere.
The Presidency stated clearly that President Tinubu has no intention of sending any proposed constitutional amendment bill, allegedly code-named “Project True Federation,” to the National Assembly by December 15 as claimed in the report.
It further explained that constitutional amendments in Nigeria are serious legislative matters that cannot be carried out arbitrarily by the President or the National Assembly alone.
The statement noted that any amendment to the Constitution requires extensive legislative procedures, including the approval of a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and endorsement by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
The Presidency stressed that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political distractions.
It also urged citizens to be cautious of fake and inflammatory reports, warning that misinformation and politically motivated propaganda are likely to increase as campaigns for the January 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The statement concluded by calling on Nigerians to reject divisive narratives capable of threatening national unity and stability.
