The media team of former Senator Nkechi Nwaogu has dismissed claims that the former lawmaker remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that she has left the party and is now contesting the 2027 Abia Central Senatorial election on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement signed by Victor Kelechi Onyendi, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Senator Nwaogu, the former lawmaker’s media team also urged the Abia State chapter of the APC to focus on its internal affairs rather than questioning Nwaogu’s political affiliation.
The statement was issued in response to comments attributed to Uche Aguoru, the Abia APC Publicity Secretary, concerning Nwaogu’s membership of the party.
According to Nwaogu’s media team, it was “not true” that the former senator remains an APC member, stressing that she had moved to the NDC and would not return to the ruling party.
Nwaogu had announced her resignation from the APC in May 2026 following the party’s Abia Central senatorial primary. She cited what she described as injustice and irregularities in the party’s internal processes. The APC’s state publicity secretary, Uche Aguoru, had at the time said the party had not received a formal notification of her resignation.
Nwaogu subsequently emerged as the NDC’s candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections. Recent reports listing the candidates for the district identify Nwaogu as the NDC candidate, alongside Emeka Atuma of the APC, Austine Akobundu of the ADC and Ogu Bob of the PDP.
In the latest statement, however, Nwaogu’s media team shifted attention to the APC’s internal political affairs, questioning why members of the party were concentrating on her political movement.
The team alleged that some APC candidates had publicly distanced themselves from the party’s governorship candidate and endorsed another candidate, describing the development as an issue the party should address.
“Before the APC begins dragging Senator Nwaogu, perhaps it should first address the conduct of some of its own candidates who have publicly distanced themselves from the party’s governorship candidate and endorsed another candidate,” the statement said.
The media team further argued that Nwaogu’s continued prominence in political discussions was an indication of the attention surrounding her candidacy in Abia Central.
It described the former senator as “a major political figure” and said she remained focused on her campaign and her bid to represent the senatorial district.
“Senator Nwaogu has left the APC, and she is not returning,” the statement declared.
It added that Nwaogu had chosen the NDC as her political platform and was participating actively in the party’s activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nwaogu has in recent months participated in NDC engagements across Abia Central. In August, she called on party executives and supporters in Isiala Ngwa South to remain united and committed ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former senator previously represented Abia Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2015 and also represented Osisioma Ngwa, Obingwa and Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Concluding the statement, her media team advised the APC to concentrate on presenting its candidates and resolving its internal political differences, while insisting that Nwaogu had moved on with the NDC.
“Senator Nkechi Nwaogu has moved on. The NDC is her political home, and she remains focused on Abia Central and the people she seeks to represent,” the statement said.
