A good leader is remembered not because of the promises made during campaigns but because of the lives changed through service. Real empowerment is not about sharing money or giving temporary gifts. It is about giving people the knowledge, skills and opportunities to build a better future. This is one important lesson many leaders can learn from Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

Education is the foundation of every successful nation. No country can develop without investing in its people. Senator Kalu understands this, and that is why much of his effort has been focused on education, skills acquisition and youth development.

His investment has gone beyond the boundaries of Abia North. More than 100 young Nigerians have benefited from specialised training programmes in China in areas such as cybersecurity, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), robotics and Artificial Intelligence. These are fields that are shaping the future of the global economy. Young people who acquire these skills are better prepared to compete anywhere in the world.

Beyond China, dozens of young Nigerians have been sponsored to study Medicine and Surgery in South America, while others are pursuing master’s degrees in science, business and other professional fields. These beneficiaries are not just receiving scholarships. They are being prepared to become doctors, scientists, business leaders and professionals who will contribute to Nigeria’s development.

This approach is not new. It reflects the same style of leadership Kalu demonstrated as Governor of Abia State. During his administration, he introduced free education, built 15 general hospitals across the state, established the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, provided free school buses and school meals, and invested heavily in education and healthcare. Those projects improved the lives of many families and gave thousands of children better access to education.

Today, as Senator representing Abia North, he has continued on the same path. Across the senatorial district, three-classroom blocks have been built in many wards, while several schools have been renovated. In some wards, as many as three schools have benefited from renovation projects.

His support has also reached thousands of pupils and students. School bags, sandals, uniforms and textbooks have been distributed across primary and secondary schools. The textbooks cover important subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and other STEM subjects. For many parents struggling with the high cost of education, these materials have reduced the financial burden and encouraged more children to remain in school.

Perhaps what stands out most about Kalu’s style of empowerment is that it focuses on lasting results. Rather than giving people something that will finish in a few days, he invests in education, skills and opportunities that can change lives permanently. A young person who receives quality education or professional training is better equipped to earn a living, create jobs, support a family and contribute to society.

This is the difference between temporary relief and lasting empowerment. Handouts may solve today’s problem, but education and skills can transform an entire lifetime. When a leader invests in people, the benefits are felt not only by the beneficiaries but also by their families, communities and future generations.

Nigeria needs more leaders who believe in this kind of empowerment. The country has millions of talented young people who only need the right opportunities to succeed. Investing in education, healthcare, skills acquisition and human capital development remains one of the surest ways to reduce poverty, create jobs and build a stronger economy.

Whether one agrees with his politics or not, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has consistently shown that leadership is about preparing people for the future. His continued investment in education, youth development and human capital has become one of the defining features of his public service.

If more leaders across Nigeria embrace this model, the country will produce more skilled professionals, more entrepreneurs, more innovators and more responsible citizens. That is the kind of empowerment that builds strong families, develops communities and moves a nation forward.

This is what others should learn from Orji Kalu.
