The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has nullified the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President, David Mark, in a ruling that also voided the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The judgment, delivered on Thursday by Justice Peter Lifu, also nullified the emergence of former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and other officials as national officers of the opposition party.
The court further ordered the cancellation of all nominations made by the ADC for the 2027 general elections, ruling that the candidates emerged through a leadership structure it declared illegal and unlawful.
The ruling followed a suit instituted by Nafiu Bala Gombe, a former Deputy National Chairman of the ADC, who challenged the legitimacy of the leadership arrangement that produced Mark and other members of the party’s interim National Working Committee.
Justice Lifu upheld Gombe’s position that the processes through which Mark, Aregbesola and other officials assumed leadership positions in the party were not conducted in accordance with the law.
The judge consequently declared all actions taken by the David Mark-led leadership in the name of the ADC unlawful and nullified them.
The judgment represents a major setback for the opposition party, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With the court’s decision affecting both the party’s leadership structure and its electoral nominations, the ruling has thrown fresh uncertainty into the ADC’s political preparations and Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition.
Further details of the judgment and possible reactions from the affected political figures and the party are awaited.
