A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in the town, with three people reportedly arrested in connection with the incident.
Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, was reportedly found unresponsive on Monday, October 5, 2026, at One Corner Hotel, located before Mosco Junction in Ekpoma.
According to accounts surrounding the incident, the lecturer had allegedly checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Jacob.
The woman, reportedly a sex worker, allegedly told investigators that after they had spent time together in the room, Uwuigbe asked her to get him water.
She reportedly left the room and, upon returning, found the lecturer unresponsive and lying lifeless on the bed.
The development reportedly prompted Angela to alert hotel management, after which the matter was reported to the police at about 8 p.m.
Police officers subsequently arrived at the hotel and took the deceased’s body to the mortuary at Oriaifo Memorial Hospital, while Angela, the hotel owner and the hotel manager were reportedly arrested as part of the investigation.
The circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death have not been publicly established, and the arrest of the three individuals does not in itself mean they are responsible for his death.
